Day 3: Adding Habits

This is the third day of Habitspark Diet Foundations. You are making great progress so far, keep it up!

Adding habits

Today we’ll cover adding habits.  It’s important to be careful about adding new habits because each habit is taking up mental energy and over-loading yourself is a recipe for disaster.  Habitspark has built in rules about adding new habits to help you keep making progress and not become overwhelmed.  The first rule is that you start with a limit of three habits (you can start with less, but no more than three habits).

Rule #1 Three habit maximum

This limit will increase as you have success with keeping habits.  When you hit 21 days in a row on a habit, you can increase the limit by 1.  So if you have been working on three habits and you reach 21 days on the first habit, you can increase the limit to 4 and add a new habit.

As you can see below, there is a line indicating a maximum of 3 habits (this is on the fancy excel spreadsheet).

""

When the first habit hits 21, a fourth habit can be added:

""

If you aren’t using the fancy excel spreadsheet, you can circle when you reach 21 days and add a new line to indicate you can start a new habit:

""

You don’t need to start the new habit right away, you can start whenever you are ready:

That’s it, now you know when to add habits.  This will have an impact on your pace through Habitspark Diet Foundations. Please wait until you have reached 21 days on a habit before adding a new habit, even if this might mean taking some extra time.  That is perfectly acceptable, and your patience is a very good sign that you will achieve long-term success.  Striving for perfection usually leads to giving up when you don’t achieve it.  It is much better to take your time, make adjustment as needed, and be kind to yourself.  That is a good habit to cultivate as well :)

Come back tomorrow for Day 4.
