Habitspark System
This system of habit creation was designed to be quite simple while encompassing almost any change you want to make in your life. It adapts to your level of readiness and can be very self-reinforcing. It is along the lines of Seinfeld’s “Don’t break the chain”
You can tweak the rules to your liking, but here is the basic system:
- Start with a maximum of 3 habits or goals that you want to perform on a daily basis
- Every day, record your progress on your habits/goals
- Success: If you perform the habit, put a number 1 higher than the day before (if it is the first day or there was an X the day before, put a 1)
- Missed: If you don’t perform the habit, put an ‘X’
- Pass: If you don’t perform the habit, but for a good reason, put a dot (‘.’) to signify a pass.
- Examples: You plan to jog for at least 20 minutes every day, but you have the flu. You plan to water your plants every day, but you are on a trip.
- TIP: Whenever possible, try to at least do something, such as stretching for 5 minutes instead of running if you have the flu
- When you hit 21 days in a row for a habit, you can add a new habit
- Whenever you miss a day, start over from 1
- If you miss 3 days within a 7 day period, you must drop the habit
- If this brings you under 3 active habits, you can start a new one to replace the dropped one.
You can easily track your progress on any lined sheet of paper, just use one line per habit. However, there are also spreadsheets & printable forums available in the beta testing forum. Here is a video introducing the fancy excel spreadsheet:
